The increased shrimp price helps farmers earn roughly between 400 and 500 million VND per hectare in profit, enabling them to re-invest in new crops after a year of ineffective farming due to the impact of COVID-19.

Currently, in Ben Tre Province, vannamei shrimp price, at the beginning of its crop, is on the rise. For instance, the price for size 100 pieces per kg is now between 90,000-95,000 VND/ kg (3.91-4.13 USD/kg), large size 20-30 pieces per kg 190,000-235,000 VND/ kg (8.26-10.22 USD/kg) with an increase of 30,000-50,000 VND/ kg (1.30-2.17 USD/kg) compared to the price of the end of 2020.

The increased shrimp price helps farmers gain some profits, enabling them to re-invest in new crops after a year of ineffective farming due to the impact of COVID-19.

Having just collected more than 19 tons of vannamei shrimp sized 25 pieces per kg at the price of 220,000 VND/ kg (9.57 USD/ kg), Mr. Nguyen Van Thi from Bao Thanh Commune, Ba Tri District brightened up at the improved shrimp price after last year’s difficult time.

According to Mr. Thi, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic reduced the price so dramatically that the farmers could hardly make any profit. As the pandemic spread has now been under control, traders started to buy again, uplifting the farmers when they enter their new farming season.

Mr. Thi said that his family has switched to high-tech shrimp farming with two or three stages instead of earthen ponds like they did before. If the current high price is maintained, it helps farmers earn roughly between 400 and 500 million VND per hectare in profit.

Mr. Tran Van Duc from Thanh Hai Commune, Thanh Phu District (Ben Tre Province) said that as his family was planning to harvest his plastic-lined shrimp ponds, several traders came to order his shrimp at the price of 190,000 VND/ kg for an estimated quantity of 5 tons, which might brought him a profit of around 300 million VND.

The increased shrimp price excites the farmers, and at the same time, enables them to invest in the two-staged high-tech farming method, making a 3 to 4 times increase in yield compared to the traditional farming in earthen ponds.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tai, a shrimp trader in Ba Tri District, after the Lunar New Year, the COVID-19 has been well-controlled in Vietnam. Restaurants and eateries are re-opening leading to the recovery of the consumption of the domestic market.

On the other hand, it is now just the beginning of vannamei shrimp crop, its supply remains low causing the higher price compared to the end of 2020 and the same period last year.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre Province, Ben Tre has an area of about 35,000 hectares of sea shrimp farming, with an output of more than 55,000 tons per year.

Currently, the province is implementing two-staged high-teach shrimp farming models and improved extensive shrimp farming of high efficiency for farmers to apply.

Ben Tre Province aims to develop 4,000 hectares of high-tech sea shrimp farming in key production areas in the province by 2025.

Besides, Ben Tre focuses on developing cooperation models, linking farming households, small production establishments into groups and cooperatives to create large raw material production areas; being a focal point connecting closely with companies and factories to supply material and market the products in value chains, bringing much more efficiency to shrimp farmers.
